Please join us for a presentation by Ms. Luba Ash and Ms. Kathy Morath:

STUDENTS IN THE ARTS: UNDERSTANDING WHO THEY ARE AND WHAT MOTIVATES THEM

“Today there is much discussion about the support of the arts in education and there are a large number of students who wish to pursue the arts as a career.  They study in performing arts high schools, magnet schools, high schools and on their own in private studios.  Our program will focus on these students and what drives them.  Their passion, desire for success, pursuit of excellence and the options for them to realize their dream will be discussed.  These students need honest informed counseling and direction to pursue the life of a performer which offers rewards and inevitable setbacks.  Our panelists are both trained performers and educators who work on a daily basis with students to pursue their passion.  They are keenly aware of what is required to be successful in the performing arts.”

Ms. Luba Ash is a counselor at the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Astoria, Queens and was a founding member of the school, which was founded by Tony Bennett in 2001.  Prior to her work at Frank Sinatra she taught Modern Dance in New York Public Schools, worked with at risk students in New York City and Day Top Village and taught for eleven years in the South Bronx at a GED center for disenfranchised teens.  In the arts, she developed the curriculum “Movement for Actors” at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, where Alec Baldwin was one of her students and choreographed theatre pieces for actors and dancers at the institute.  She founded her own dance company in Soho called the Luba Ash Theatre Company in which she choreographed and ran the company.  She is, in addition to being a counselor, a licensed Modern Dance teacher in the New York City Public Schools.

She came to this country at age four and one half and has been active in the arts since the age of five.  She earned her BFA from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and her MA in Education for Guidance Counseling from Hunter College and her Administrative/Assistant Principal License from Touro College .  She has also worked as a counselor and administrator for the GED program she developed at Van Arsdale High School in Brooklyn.  Her interest in the arts makes her a strong advocate for the importance of the arts in education and in understanding the passion that is a part of student’s lives as she counsels them about their future.

Ms. Kathy Morath is a performer and teacher who has been involved in theatre for over 30 years.  She has performed on Broadway, off-Broadway, in major regional theatres, on television and has premiered in numerous new works.  She was in the original Sullivan Street production of The Fantasticks as The Girl and has her own cabaret act as well as made a number of CDs.  She has her own organization that provides training and coaching to future performers and runs workshops in Argentina and Mexico teaching the American Song Book.

Ms. Morath is a mother and wife and earned her BA in Semiotics from Brown University. She has served as a Peer Reviewer for the National Endowment of the Arts for the opera and musical theatre division. She currently teaches Musical Theatre and Musical Theatre History at The American Musical & Drama Academy in New York.  She sees and evaluates over 1000 student performances throughout the country at student theatre festivals and as an adjudicator for AMDA.  She was born in Colorado and raised in New Jersey.  Her father is the noted pianist and historian, Max Morath.

“CURRENT TRENDS and CHALLENGES of COLLEGE PLACEMENT FACING TODAY’S STUDENTS AND COUNSELORS and an EVALUATION MODEL and RECOMMENDED CHANGES TO CONSIDER”

PRESENTED BY: DR. CHARLES T. WILSON

Dr. Charles T. Wilson is the former Superintendent of the Pelham Schools and previously was Superintendent of North Salem School district.  Earlier in his career he was both a counselor and the Director of Guidance at Pelham High School.  He had been a past presenter and participant at WPRCA and state conferences.  He remains active as an educational consultant and adjunct professor.  He is currently adjunct professor for the administration department of Stony Brook University.  He continues to consult with local districts on a number of educational issues and strategic planning. Last year, he was invited back to the Pelham district to evaluate its college placement program.  Working closely with the counseling department, and its director Gene Farrell, they conducted an extensive longitudinal study of college placement trends in Pelham, the region and nationally.  This research model, its findings and recommendation will be surprising and interesting with possible application to other schools.  Hand outs will be given.
